The Plymouth Township Police Chief, Thomas Tiderington,
knows the value of our youth and incorporates opportunities to
welcome them into the police department. For the past 4 years,
the Youth Services Unit has coordinated and run a one-week
Youth Academy for Plymouth Township students ages 12-14. The
Youth Academy provides an accurate image of police officers
and encourages students to consider a career in law
enforcement.
A goal that we try to obtain during the academy is teaching
the students the intellectual side of police work including
communications, forensics, traffic accident investigation,
evidence techniques for crime scenes, K-9 Unit and routine
patrol. Demonstrations of arrest control, special weapons,
tactical response and Pressure Point Control Tactics are
completed. We also include the academic side of police work
including the training that is required beyond high school and
college courses that are necessary to qualify as a law
enforcement officer.
A very interesting and a favorite among the students is the
computerized Firearm Training Simulator at the Western Wayne
Regional Academy. The students experience the stress of acting
and thinking quickly on their feet. The students learn that
the stimulator is a tool used to help an instructor assess an
officer’s verbal skill at controlling a volatile situation and
an officer’s split second decision on whether to use lethal
force. The students do experience frustration with the demands
to think and act so quickly.
The Youth Academy provides evidence to the students of what it
takes as a police officer to keep their community safe
including bravery and keeping fit to handle the duties of a
police officer, however, the major ingredient in police work
is knowledge and the ability to communicate.
